Anua Heartleaf 77 Toner: What It Does and Who It Suits
The Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner is a calming, water-light hydrating toner for skin that is reactive rather than damaged. It is 77% houttuynia cordata (heartleaf) extract in place of most of the water, and its job is to bring redness and reactivity down — not to exfoliate, brighten or treat anything. If your skin stings at new products, flushes easily, or has been pushed too hard by actives, this is the step that settles it.
What does heartleaf actually do?
Houttuynia cordata is a calming agent, not an active. That distinction matters more than it sounds.
An active — an acid, a retinoid, a high-dose vitamin C — changes how your skin behaves by irritating it slightly and prompting it to respond. A calming agent does the opposite: it reduces the response. Heartleaf is used in Korean formulas for redness, heat and general reactivity, in the same family of jobs as centella and panthenol.
So it will not fade a dark spot, clear a blackhead or smooth texture. What it does is make the rest of your routine survivable on skin that otherwise rejects things.
Who is it for?
Three situations where it earns its place:
- Genuinely sensitive skin — the kind that has always reacted to fragrance, heat and wind.
- Sensitised skin — skin that used to be fine and is not any more, almost always from too many actives introduced too fast. This is the more common case.
- Oily skin that keeps getting stripped — heartleaf hydrates without adding oil, which breaks the strip-and-overproduce loop.
If your main complaint is texture, congestion or pigmentation, this is not your product. Start at Exfoliating & Texture or Brightening & Dark Spots instead.
How do you use it?
Straight after cleansing, while your skin is still damp. Pour two or three drops into your palms, press it in, repeat if you want more. Do not use a cotton pad — you lose most of the product to the pad and you drag the skin for no reason.
Two or three thin layers beat one heavy one. Follow with a serum while still damp, then a moisturiser to seal it. Morning and night is fine; it is gentle enough that daily use is the point rather than a risk.
Is a Korean toner the same as a Western toner?
No, and this trips up almost everyone coming from a Western routine. A Western toner has historically been an astringent — alcohol-based, designed to strip oil and leave skin squeaky. A Korean toner is a hydrating step. No tightening, no squeak. It goes on first to put water into the skin so everything after it absorbs better.
If a toner leaves your face feeling tight, it is doing the old job, not this one.
What should you layer it with?
It plays well with almost everything because it is not competing for the same mechanism. Two combinations that work particularly well:
- Heartleaf then PDRN — calming plus repair, for skin that is both reactive and losing firmness. See PDRN.
- Heartleaf then a ceramide cream — if your skin stings on application, that is a barrier problem and hydration alone will not fix it. See Ceramides.
The one rule: if you are using retinal or an acid that night, apply the toner first and let it do its job. Do not use it as a buffer to justify a stronger active than your skin can handle.
How long before you see anything?
Hydration is immediate — skin looks less dull within minutes. Redness and reactivity take longer, generally two to three weeks of consistent use, and the change is that things stop happening rather than something new starting. Fewer flare-ups, less stinging at other products, less of that tight feeling after cleansing.
That is an unglamorous result and it is the correct one. Calming products are judged by what they prevent.
Where it sits in the Anua range
Anua built its reputation on this toner, and the rest of the range follows the same logic — heartleaf across cleansers, creams and pads, for skin that is stressed rather than skin that needs correcting. The exception is the azelaic acid serum, which is the one to reach for if you have redness and blemishes together.

Quick answers
Can I use it every day? Yes, morning and night. It contains no actives that need a frequency limit.
Will it break me out? It is a water-light formula with no heavy oils, so it is unlikely to cause congestion. As with anything new, patch test first.
Can I use it with retinal? Yes — apply the toner first, then retinal on dry skin. It will not stop retinal working.
Is 77% a meaningful number? It means heartleaf extract replaces most of what would otherwise be water. It is a real formulation choice rather than a marketing figure, though a lower percentage of a well-formulated extract is not automatically worse.
