Blemish-Prone Skin: A Gentler Approach That Works Better

The standard approach to blemishes is to attack them: strip the oil, dry the spot, scrub the surface. It works for about a fortnight, and then the skin — stripped, inflamed and barrier-damaged — starts breaking out in new places, and the marks left behind last far longer than the blemishes did.

Korean formulation takes the opposite route, and for most people it is the more effective one.

Why gentle wins

A blemish is inflammation. Everything that adds more inflammation — harsh cleansers, alcohol-heavy toners, physical scrubs, picking — makes the mark it leaves darker and longer-lasting.

That mark is the real cost. The spot lasts a week. The pigmentation it leaves can last six months. Protecting the skin around the blemish is worth more than attacking the blemish itself.

What to use

A low-pH gentle cleanser, twice a day, no more. Squeaky is a warning sign, not a result.

Salicylic acid, two or three nights a week. Oil-soluble, so it clears the pore from the inside. Not nightly — that is how people end up sensitised.

Niacinamide, daily. It calms redness, regulates oil and fades the marks left behind, all without irritation. If you add one thing, add this.

Centella and cica — the calming layer. This is what Korean brands reach for when skin is angry, and it is why ranges like SKIN1004 and PURITO suit blemish-prone skin better than a dedicated acne line.

A light moisturiser, always. Skipping moisturiser on oily skin is the most common self-inflicted wound in this whole category.

What to stop

Scrubs. Alcohol toners. Spot-treating with anything undiluted. Using three actives at once because each is meant to help. And touching your face, which is harder than all of the above put together.

Purging versus breaking out

Worth knowing the difference before you abandon something that is working.

Purging happens where you normally break out, appears within the first two to four weeks of starting an active that speeds cell turnover, and clears faster than a normal blemish. Push through it.

Breaking out happens in new places, can start at any point, and does not settle. Stop the product.

The routine

Morning: gentle cleanser, calming toner, niacinamide, light moisturiser, sunscreen.
Night: oil cleanse if you wore sunscreen or makeup, gentle foam, salicylic acid two to three nights a week, moisturiser.

Change one thing at a time and give it a month. Start at Sensitive Skin if you react to things, or Pores & Blackheads if congestion is the main event.

Persistent, painful or cystic acne is a medical condition, not a skincare problem. A GP or dermatologist has treatments that no cosmetic product can match — please see one rather than spending months on serums.
