Korean Sunscreen in an Australian Summer: How to Actually Wear It

The best sunscreen is the one you wear every single day. That sounds like a platitude until you have spent a summer skipping it because the only bottle in the cupboard left your face grey, slid off by eleven, and pilled under everything you put on top.

That is the whole reason Korean SPF took over. Not because it is exotic, but because the texture is pleasant enough that wearing it stops being a decision you have to make each morning.

Two mistakes almost everyone makes

1. Not using enough. This is the big one, and it undoes everything else. The tested amount for a face and neck is roughly two finger-lengths — squeeze along your index and middle finger, base to tip. Most people use about a third of that, and get about a third of the benefit. If your bottle is lasting months, that is the problem.

2. Putting it on too early in the routine. Sunscreen goes on last, after your moisturiser, as the final step of the morning. Anything layered over the top dilutes and disturbs the film you just laid down. Makeup is the exception — that goes on after, and gently.

What the numbers on the bottle mean

SPF measures protection against UVB, the wavelength behind sunburn. That is the number everyone quotes.

The PA rating — PA+, PA++, PA+++, PA++++ — measures UVA, and UVA is the one that matters for aging and pigmentation. It penetrates deeper, passes through window glass and is roughly constant through the day and the year. A high SPF with a low PA rating is only doing half the job. Look for PA+++ or PA++++.

Reapplication, honestly

Protection degrades over a day — through sweat, oil, touching your face and simple breakdown. Every two hours is the standard advice if you are outdoors or near a window for long stretches.

Realistically, most people are not going to re-cream a full face at their desk. A sunscreen stick or a cushion is a far easier reapplication step, and an easy step you actually do beats a thorough one you skip. If you are outside for any length of time — sport, the beach, gardening — use a sunscreen made and tested for that job, and reapply it properly.

Sunscreen and your actives

This is where sunscreen stops being optional. Retinal and retinol, exfoliating acids and vitamin C all either increase sun sensitivity or do work that sunlight directly undoes.

If you are treating dark spots and not wearing SPF every morning, you are refilling the bath with the plug out. Pigmentation work without sun protection is the single most common reason people conclude that a serum did not work.

Which type suits you

Lightweight chemical filters are what most Korean sunscreens use — thin, invisible, comfortable under makeup, and the reason there is no white cast. Mineral filters, based on zinc oxide, sit on the surface and suit reactive or freshly-exfoliated skin better, at the cost of a slightly heavier feel.

Neither is inherently superior. The one you will reapply is the better one.

Where to start

If you want one that disappears on the skin, the SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF50 is the easiest first Korean sunscreen — it behaves more like a light serum than a sunscreen, and the centella suits skin that reacts to things.

Browse the full range in Sunscreens. If your skin is sensitive or currently unhappy, start at Centella & Cica instead and add SPF once your barrier is comfortable.

Sun protection is one part of staying safe in the sun. For extended deliberate exposure, follow the current advice from the Cancer Council and use a sunscreen made for that purpose.
